Training and Discipline

It is possible, contrary to popular belief, to train your cat! As with any other training, it's best if it is done using kind and positive reinforcement by rewarding correct and ignoring unwanted behavior.

Cats seem to learn through association. When a behavior or action is followed by a reward it will be repeated. A behavior followed by a bad consequence or simply ignored, tends to not be repeated. So as your considering what you want your cat to do, think about what the cat's motivation is and give them that (motivation) as a reward. Cats tend to be only motivated by food. Unfortunately, that will only assist you in training them when they are hungry.

Begin house training your cat as soon as it comes home. Fortunately, kittens often learn from their mothers and are often close to being trained already. Litter boxes should be placed in quiet, inconspicuous location so they may use utilize it in private. They also prefer it NOT be near their place of food or their place of sleep. Praise them when they perform correctly. If you can catch a kitten just about to use an inappropriate location, pick them up and place them in their little box. Don't scold or rub her nose in it, this won't help in training them. Clean any soiled area on your carpet well, as the smell may encourage your cat to return to that location for eliminating.

Cat liter can be offensive to a cat because some are so deodorized. Keep your cat's box clean daily, as your cat will respond in using it when it's clean. When cleaning your liter box completely or using disinfectants, make certain they don't contain phenol, which is extremely toxic to cats. If the disinfectants smell is strong and offensive it will deter a cat from using the box.

If you cat is troubling you by eliminating in an incorrect area, try deterring them with aluminum foil or cling-wrap. Cats generally don't like to walk over these surfaces. It might also be helpful if you moved the cats bed or feeding bowl to that area, as cats won't soil where they are to sleep or eat. Consider changing the type of cat liter you are using, as it may be offensive to them. Catching your cat in the act with a spray bottle of water can also be effective in training, without being cruel. If none of these suggestions work then have your cat checked out by a veterinarian, as there may be an additional medical condition causing your pet trouble.
